NYC public transport campaign picks up steam

Building Alcohol Ad-Free Transit (BAAFT) is a grass-roots community group in the US, whose mission is “to remove alcohol advertising from NYC public transit to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our young people”. Unlike other major US cities, New York allows alcohol advertising “in trains, buses, shelters, and stations.”

Give what we’ve learned in Australia about the effectiveness of community campaigning (in securing secondary supply laws and NSW’s so-called ‘lock-out’ laws), it will be interesting to see whether BAAFT’s campaign meets with success. They’ve so far picked up a host of supporting organisations, including including public health advocates, businesses, and medical, religious, youth, and educational organisations – we’ll be following their public advocacy journey with interest!
