App review: Drugs, alcohol and teens

US culture is fairly engrained in Australia, and while this app is unashamedly American, it still offers an alternative for presenting alcohol and other drug information to an Australian teenage audience. It uses music, illustrations and a discussion of a range of issues including specific risks to teenagers of alcohol and drug use, how the alcohol industry seems to promote alcohol use as a safe and normal activity, and how drugs affect the body.

Quizzes and talking points are offered in each of the 5 chapters and a final test evaluates your knowledge. The legal drinking age cited is different than Australia’s, and the navigation can confuse every now and then, but if you can get past the strong US accents this app may be of interest to someone working in alcohol and drug prevention for young people.
