A study of alcohol coverage in Australian daily metropolitan newspapers over a ten-year period has found that between 2000 and 2011:
- News stories around alcohol consumption have more than doubled
- The three most common themes are promotion (21%), drink driving (16%) and restrictions/policy (16%)
- In the past 5 years, promotion stories have lessened and stories on restrictions have increased
- Health advocates and politicians are increasingly being used as spokespeople instead of/as well as industry representatives.
