New report on alcohol advertising

The independent Alcohol Advertising Review Board (AARB) has released its first annual report, with some damning findings for the alcohol industry’s success (or lack of) in self-regulation. Some key points from the report include:

AARB received 200 complaints referring to 175 ads in its first year of operation:

  • 104 complaints were fully upheld – AARB contacted the advertiser and asked them to modify or remove the ad
  • 32 were partially upheld

Complaints were most likely to:

  • Relate to beer or spirit products
  • Involve online, television or sports-related ads

A top ten of  ‘alcohol advertising shockers’ was reported, including:

  •  Alcohol advertisements outside a school
  • Jim Beam Racing Kids Team clothing for 4 year olds
  • Alcohol advertising hidden in sporting commentary
