Drinking Age

Strong evidence for raising drinking age but little support

Today, a national forum at Parliament House is examining the economic, health and mental health impacts of teen drinking. Professor John Toumbourou, chairman of Health Psychology at Deakin University, has called on the governement to raise the legal drinking age to 21, in order to reduce the harms associated with early heavy drinking.

Steve Allsop, Professor and Director, National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University reflects in The Conversation that while the evidence is strong evidence, there appears to be little community support for such change.
